Close To The Core

Once again I’ll try to write a few words of what’s been happening in the city. The time is slipping away and our term is in the final stages. Roger and I have been changing over accounts and such like, part of the changing scene here at Sugar Hill. Once Ron and Carol arrive on Dec 3rd, we will finish the last few things where I have been responsible and pass the torch. It has been an amazing two years in NYC.

The hot summer we have had is starting to give in to a fall feel! Cool evenings and mornings are most pleasant, and the trees and plants are showing signs of change. The fall is a beautiful time in the city. The hats and hoodies are appearing more each day. I am finally comfortable in a short sleeve shirt. They are talking of a colder and more snowy winter here in the east??

Our calendar has been mostly full all summer, boys families and friends and we have had a nice bit ourselves and Rogers some to, so keeps things hopping here. Think all the weekends are booked until we leave the first week of December!

We had our latest boy join the unit on August 24, Jesse Barkman from Swalwell, Alberta. Another fine young man to join our unit. So, we have three boys from Canada and Thomas Dyck from Hesston KS the lone USA boy. We will have two more arrive before we leave.

The boys have had a busy summer at the food pantry’s. With all the migrants showing up in the city, it takes a lot more time and food to provide for them. One wonders where it will all lead to, not everyone happy about it. The work at Lincoln Hospital keeps the boys aware of making wise decisions, some sad cases show up and they visit with these people and find out things don’t go well when there is nobody to guide them. Some of the boys have had negative interaction on the subway and the street, making them more aware of the trouble that could happen. On the positive side, they make friends with co-workers and show them a better way, with one attending services with us.

For Labor Day the boys went to Mifflinburg for a youth get together and ball game and the rest of us went to Cold Springs, a cool town in the hills. We took Metro-North Train there, about one hour and twenty minute ride. Hiked some trails and saw some awesome scenery. Laurence and Bernice joined us and Rogers along with Eric, another attendee from tract work. Also we were joined by Kendon and Kaitlyn and Clay and Dana Shultis, the tract couple from KS who is starting tract work in Queens. The tract work continues to expand in NYC.

Wishing you all a good day and a happy fall!
