Well, it has been awhile since I sat down and did a post. Seems like life in NYC has become a fairly predictable pattern. There are some new things we see and experience, but much is the same. We are almost at the one year and a half of our two year term, which seems amazing in itself. We continue to enjoy our time here.
We have a new young man at Sugar Hill, Chase Toews from Ontario, Canada, another fine addition to our unit. He came on the plane dressed as an Amish, that may give you a clue as what he is like. Very outgoing and free in doing as he feels! He wasn’t expecting what he got his first night here, took him a bit to figure it out.
I will introduce you to some of our friends that we work with…. Luis is a Dominican native that came to NYC in 2013. He is an enthused worker for the Lord. He is a street preacher in the Bronx, and has been using our gospel literature for years. He also gets both Spanish and English bibles from us. He sets up speakers on a busy intersection and preaches and passes out the literature. One time Roger and I went and observed his operation and ended up we helped pass out the literature. Was impressed with his humble and simple message, interesting how many people stopped and listened and took the offered info. Larry is a older gentleman from right in our Harlem community. An African-American, he walks up and down the streets giving everyone a tract. He comes to the mission often and gets more tracts and visits with us and the boys. He always wants someone to pray with him before he leaves. We all love Larry, his humble approach to life. He is doing much with his talents. He reaches many people that others are not able to. Maria is another of our regulars that comes and picks up our tracts. She lives alone in the Bronx in a small apartment, been there once to drop off some tracts. The place is full from wall to wall and has a dog that barks constantly. Don’t know if she has a job or how she supports herself, but she does make things to sell on the street. Some food and stuff she buys and resells. She is always cheerful and busy about the Lord’s business. Armando is a Spanish man who comes often for the tract Heart of Man, it is the only title he uses. Many of our contacts speak little if any English, so we learn to communicate other ways, sometimes google translate. Then there is Danny and Kenny, two young men, 23 and 18 years old. Kenny’s dad picked up a tract in a mud puddle and it changed his life, and they are on fire! They were here Sunday evening to get more Bibles and tracts and stayed awhile and visited. Danny is the 18 years old and can quote scripture like… They set up wherever the Lord tells them and sometimes preach and sometimes just read the bible aloud and others pass out the goods. Amazing! They are true blue, no question. Wonder how long they can keep up that fervor? And we probably have a dozen others that come from time to time. I think the most we gave out to one person was 25 boxes and we didn’t have everything he wanted. Fed Ex is well aware of 762 St. Nicholas Ave. Gospel Publishers knows Roger well and sometimes questions the volume of orders to make sure it is correct. The tract volume has increased much in NYC. We also had a pastor from Bangladesh who called and wanted to meet Roger and I, he was looking for someone to provide money for housing and food so he could preach. We told him that isn’t our policy. Seemed like he thought by talking faster and louder we would be convinced. Not so. So, that gives you some insight on what happens by times. Never know when the doorbell rings who will be there.
We continue to have a steady pace of company, which we enjoy. Richard and Jane Schmidt from MI are coming today for a couple days, excited about that.
We took a quick trip to Rochester MN to Mayo Clinic to be with Barry and Andrea while Barry had his brain tumor removed. Didn’t get it all, so waiting for doctors to decide what is next. So many places to be. Thanks to all who helped in any way!
Wishing all a good day and a safe and happy summer!!
